A special ceremony hosted by the Swellendam Municipality with Minister of Cultural Affairs & Sport, Anroux Marais; Executive Mayor Nicholas Myburgh; Municipal Manager Anton Groenewald, and various municipal officials on 24 November 2020, to commemorate the start of construction of the new Swellendam Library.

The current Swellendam Library is 183 years old, one of the oldest libraries in South Africa. The new library will be located next to Swellendam Primary School with the main entrance of the library facing Station Street.
