Date:           9 December 2021
Enquiries:    Municipal Manager, Anton Groenewald

On 10 December and 11 December as well as over the next 10 days, the Department of Health in Swellendam will be conducting vaccinations throughout the various towns.

Swellendam Municipality is currently at a 61% vaccination rate. The 60+ age group ranks highest at 80% of the group being vaccinated. The 50+ age group is at the midway point of 50%. The municipality is kindly requesting that all residents please make an effort to get fully vaccinated and to please not resort to social media as a source of information for vaccination decisions.

The 18 to 49 age group remains the lowest in the district with a vaccination rate of 41%. In order to achieve herd immunity at least 80% of the Swellendam population would need to be vaccinated. Should this occur we can not only position our municipal area as a “safe” destination for visitors, tourists and guests but dually safely host guests and protect our economy.

Current data reflects that individuals being hospitalised in Swellendam for COVID-19 are unvaccinated. Individuals who have been vaccinated and who have contracted COVID-19 have not experienced symptoms as severely as those who have not been vaccinated.

One in 10 people in our towns, work in a tourism-related or hospitality-related business. We can ill afford another lockdown or bad summer season. It is in all our interest to make our town safe.

To encourage everyone to get vaccinated the municipality has decided to give away R200 Spar and/or Checkers vouchers to the first 1500 individuals who are receiving their first vaccination dose. Vouchers will be handed out at vaccination sites following vaccination.

Please note that this is over and above other vouchers that are being offered by the Department of Health. Your cooperation is appreciated.

F. DU RAND (EXECUTIVE MAYOR)
