Daily specials, local dishes, and in-house burgers: At Grunters Restaurant and Pub in Malgas, you can also catch a live game, or see a live band, and your meal could still cost under R100.

Grunters’ menu

The Grunters menu has everything from fish and chips to export-quality sirloin steak. Then there is a gourmet pizza menu that contains slow lamb, salmon sublime and one called the oepsie pizza, which comes with braai meat as a topping.

According to restaurantguru.com, lamb and burgers are favourites. The lamb tails are particularly popular according to Donovan McPherson, co-owner of the restaurant. Additionally, for under R100, there are burger options that include chicken, chicken cheese, cheeseburgers, and the Breede Burger, all served with chips and salad. The patties and rolls for the burgers are made and baked in-house.

Specials and local night

At Grunters the daily specials rotate between a cheddar melt schnitzel, steak trinchado, fish and chips, and seafood pasta among others. Plus, Thursday night is local night, where something like potjiekos is the special. 

All of the regular beers and spirits can be ordered at the bar. They don’t normally serve craft beer, but during the tourism season, they will bring some in to meet the demand, says Donovan.

Live music at Grunters

What was once a local boat called Fish Eagle now serves as an outdoor stage, which host to regular musical acts. Some of these include rock veterans Akkedis and recording artist Craig Vee. The stage has also hosted cover acts for up-and-coming artists like Seth Coetzee.

Planned acts coming up include Watershed and Rocksteady.

Location and operating times

Grunters is situated on the Malagas Pont road, close to the Breede River trading post. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday 9 am to 7:30 pm and is closed on Mondays.
