The organizers of the Around the Pot gravel race have created another way for cyclists to experience Swellendam by bike. They have opened the 200-mile route of the event for riders to access all year round.

This ride is called the Around the Pot DIY and it’s a 320km gravel ride that can be completed over several days, with accommodation spread along the route.

What is the deal with the Around the Pot DIY?

The reason for this move, according to race organiser Rohan Germishuys, is to allow those who want to experience Swellendam, but can’t make it to the event, to still do it at their own leisure.

The ride can be done over several days with the organisers offering packaged options detailing stage distance and accommodation.

What are the package options?

The organisers have created several breakdowns of the route, creating options for multiple-day events. Some of these include an option to do it in two days with a one night stay at the Malagas Hotel. The two stages will be 180km and 140km.

A second option is to do the ride in three days, spending one night at the Halfampieskraal Guest Home and another night at the Malagas Hotel. The three distances will be 120km, 60km, and 140km.

A third option is a four-day, three-night version where riders stay the first night at Halfampieskraal Guest Home, the second night at the Malagas Hotel and the third night at Grootvadersbosch Farm. The four distances are 120km, 60km, 100km and 40km back to Swellendam.

Germishuys says that the ride can be broken down into a six-day ride and the cost of the experience covers your parking, goodie bag and first night’s accommodation.

For rides of more than one day, participants will have to cover the rest of their accommodation. Although, Germishuys says that they have discounted deals with some of the establishments.

An extra MTB option

According to Germishuys, riders can also choose to stay at the Grootvadersbosch Farm for two days. This will allow them to spend one day riding the farm’s MTB trails before carrying on with the Around the Pot DIY ride.

One of the Grootvadersbosch Farm routes once formed part of the Cape Epic mountain bike race.
