Swellendam Municipality has recently been informed by the Democratic Alliance that Councillor B.O. Sonqwenqwe (Speaker), Councillor Abraham Pokwas (Deputy Mayor) and Councillor Gcobisa Mangcu-Qotyiwe’s membership to the Democratic Alliance has been terminated and that they therefore no longer hold office at Swellendam Municipality, on behalf of the Democratic Alliance.

The Municipal Manager, Ms A. Vorster, therefore today declared the above positions as vacancies to the IEC, and in the case of Ward Councillor Abraham Pokwas, additionally to the Western Cape Government Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell.

The municipality would like to confirm that these vacancies have no effect on the normal functioning of Swellendam Municipality and all operations will continue as before. Due to the time of year, Council is currently in recess.
