Ronnie’s Sex Shop Just Won’t Die, And Everyone Is Glad For That
01 Apr 2022
2020 was a bad year for the tourism industry. People couldn’t go anywhere and hence places reliant on tourism weren’t getting any visitors. The famous Ronnie's Sex Shop was one of the hardest hit by this. By June 2020, just three months after the lockdown was announced, the establishment was on its knees and crowdfunding money to keep its doors open with a Backabuddy campaign. But it survived that struggle and with normality slowly returning, it is beginning to find its form again. This is the form that made it a must-stop venue for anyone going to or coming from Barrydale along Route 62. The Background To Ronnie’s Sex Shop It was initially meant to be named Ronnie’s Shop, a fruit stall on Route 62 serving travellers using the route. But that changed when his friends suggested he open a pub instead. This suggestion though, only came after these friends added the word Sex between Ronnie’s and Shop. The Vibe And Menu at Ronnie’s Sex Shop There’s nothing fancy about Ronnie’s Sex Shop. It’s a simple roadhouse where passers-by can come for a quick bite and beer before going on their way. But that’s not how the people who pass through feel when they encounter the place. Those who visit speak of an unforgettable experience, others speak of their visit like it’s a noddy badge. It is a photo moment for many. As if the long trip was made more worthwhile because they stopped at the "Sex Shop." .Maybe this is because there is so much freedom there. Patrons can write a message on the walls (if they can find space). Likewise, many have left their T-shirt (or underwear) hanging from the roof beams as a mark of their visit. It is an establishment without pretence, and its patrons don't have to pretend either. Surprisingly, despite its profile and reputation, according to Ronnie, some people still visit the shop thinking it’s an actual sex shop. Yet he also says that he is yet to see any of them leave disappointed.Getting There And Operating Times Ronnie’s Sex Shop is situated on Route 62 in Kannaland, just outside Barrydale. It operates all day and some of the night every day, opening at 10 am and closing at 9 pm.Contact: Ronnies Sex Shop Tel: 028 572 1153 Email: ronnie@ronniessexshop.co.za Website We aim to showcase the amazing accommodation, restaurants, and events in Swellendam and surrounding areas. Buy A Souvenir or a New Lounge Suite from Barrydale's Donkey Shed
24 Mar 2022
On the popular Route 62, between the hiking trails, 4x4 routes and fishing spots is a vintage shop that does more than vintage items. The Donkey Shed is a store where you’ll find anything from a nifty souvenir to say you were there, to a previously loved couch and even a toaster that still works. The Donkey Shed Backstory Donkey Shed was initially a restaurant in Barrydale. Already under strain due to poor tourism numbers, the COVID lockdown effectively killed the restaurant. But a new Donkey Shed was born from that tragedy. This was after owner Sarah Fitzgerald held a closing down sale of all the restaurant equipment. She discovered that she was good at selling things, and started a vintage second-hand store.Souvenirs, Vintage Furniture, And Masterpieces At The Donkey Shed When you visit this establishment you get a store that stocks pre-loved clothing, vintage furniture, and even jams and preserves. Some of the items you’ll find there include rustic cupboards, vintage couches, and porch furniture. Alternatively, you’ll also find kitchen appliances like toasters and coffee machines, crockery, and even something as old as a hand-operated sewing machine.Where Do The Items Come From According to Fitzgerald, the Donkey Shed gets all of its stock from Barrydale residents. But it’s not donated like a charity, instead, it’s sold on consignment, on behalf of the owner, with Fitzgerald taking a commission. This second-hand model is where the former restaurant finds its true success. There is also a small gift shop section, where local arts, crafts, pottery, and handmade soaps can be found. It's perfect for tourists looking for a souvenir of their Barrydale stay. It also collaborates with local businesses. Like in February 2022 when it hosted a clearance sale on behalf of the Karoo Art Hotel. The volume was too much for the Shed, so instead, they hosted the sale at the Belanti Theatre. Finding The Donkey Shed The Donkey Shed is situated at 12 Tennant Street in Barrydale. It operated from 10 am to 3 pm Thursday to Monday, and is close on Tuesday and Wednesday. While it’s difficult to give prices Fitzgerald says that the items in the store can cost anything from R5 to R12,000.Contact: The Donkey Shed Tel: 083 680 2411 Email: donkeyshedbarrydale@gmail.com WebsiteYou May Also LikeNeed to do some shopping before going to your Swellendam accommodation?
